Why SmartFit™? With Dr. Sarah Urton

Like us, Dr. Sarah Urton wants you to love your feet. She worked closely with our team to refine our SmartFit™ custom insoles.

We caught up with Dr. Sarah at the Casca HQ to find out what you don't know about keeping your feet happy.

Introduce yourself!

Dr. Sarah Urton, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. I practice at the Kitsilano Foot & Ankle Clinic.

How did you get involved with Casca?

Braden from Casca reached out to me via a mutual friend. Casca was in the process of evolving the SmartFit™ technology and was looking for an advisor that could oversee the development from a biomechanical/medical perspective.

Why is foot health important?

Your feet are the first point of contact with the earth and the base of everything you do. Ultimately, your feet are your body's foundation, so keeping them healthy is vital to your overall health.

Foot problems can lead to issues with your knees, back and beyond. You build wellness from the ground up.

What's something about foot health that people don't know?

Your feet can tell you a lot about your general health condition or warn you of underlying health conditions. We need to listen to the signals our body sends us. Preventive care is hugely important in this regard. Ensuring your feet have sufficient support on a daily basis can prevent people from developing foot problems in the future.

Is SmartFit™ only for people with foot problems?

The reality is that only a small percentage of people have 'perfect feet', and 2 out of every 3 people wear ill-fitting shoes. SmartFit™ ensures your feet have the support they need, and the custom nature of the insoles ensures a proper fit.

What does the daily pursuit of wellness mean to you?

I see it as the balancing act of practicing healthy routines to enhance my physical, mental and emotional condition. These practices can look very different depending on individual needs and require more discipline than motivation - feelings come and go which make them a less reliable way of achieving consistency. Discipline provides a guide by following rules/promises you’ve made to yourself that remain constant through all emotional states. When you truly care about yourself the steps to wellness become clear.

What does your personal wellness routine look like?

Aside from eating healthy and maintaining a varied exercise routine, I've found mindfulness to be the most important aspect of my overall wellbeing. Tuning to my thoughts and how I feel in my body enables me to choose the practices that will make me feel strong. Sometimes a healthy day for me is hiking the grouse grind followed with a swim and sauna. Other days wellness looks like a long walk at the beach with a milkshake. I also don't compare my wellness routine with anyone else - that is a fast way to pain and unhappiness. We all have different needs and that's what makes life beautiful.

What's your favourite shoe from the range?

That's like choosing a favourite child.
